The cover image illustrates a key but underappreciated threat of global change—that oxygen levels are declining in many aquatic ecosystems. These declines are caused by human-induced inputs of nutrients, as well as rising temperatures, which increase stratification. At the same time, rising temperatures and other climatic stressors increase metabolic demand for oxygen in many organisms. Together, these effects are starting to cause oxygen deficits and hence energy deficits, affecting the physiology, ecology, and evolution of aquatic animals.
